There is something about photographing a family at home that I don’t think a perfectly styled location can ever quite recreate.
Home already knows you.
It knows which corner the kids climb into, which couch everyone piles onto, where the dogs insist on sitting, and exactly how much chaos can fit into one room.
For this in-home family photography session in Winter Garden, Florida, we didn’t need to create much of anything. We had four little ones, two golden retrievers, a beautiful wall of books, and a family willing to let the afternoon unfold exactly as it was going to.
And honestly, that was more than enough.
Family Photos That Actually Feel Like Your Family
We started with everyone together on the couch—which, with four children and two dogs, is less of a pose and more of an experiment.
Someone was looking away. Someone was moving. A dog wandered directly into the foreground. The baby needed holding. One of the girls was ready to move on approximately three seconds after sitting down.
Perfect.
Because tucked between those moments were the photographs I love most: a little hand reaching for one of the dogs, sisters laughing together, a toddler buried in golden retriever fur, Mom holding the baby while everything happened around her.
There are certainly photographs where everyone is together and looking toward the camera. I always want to give families those.
But then I want to keep going.
I want the photograph from thirty seconds later, when everyone forgets about me.

And somewhere in all of that movement, real life starts showing up.
Years from now, the bookshelf behind this family might look completely different. The couch may be gone. Those little floral dresses will certainly have been outgrown.
The baby won't fit into someone's arms quite like that anymore.
Even the dogs—the sweet, ordinary presence of them lying at everyone's feet—belong specifically to this chapter.
That's why the house matters.
It isn't just the backdrop.
It's part of the photograph.
The Photos I Think We’ll Miss the Most
I think sometimes we imagine the photograph we'll treasure most will be the one where everyone looks beautiful and everything went according to plan.
And sometimes it is.
But I think just as often, it’s the photograph we didn’t realize we needed.
The dog asleep beside you.
Your child laughing so hard their entire face changes.
The blur of somebody moving through the frame.
The way your toddler used to throw their whole body across the family dog without thinking twice about it.
The way everyone somehow fit on that couch.
Those photographs aren't really about what your family looked like.
They're about remembering what it felt like to belong to it.
And that is always what I'm looking for.
