Nostalgic Family Photography Inspired by Slow Florida Evenings
There’s a particular kind of childhood I think these photographs belong to.
One that feels a little slower. Linen hanging on the line. Flowers picked from the yard and held in tiny hands. Bare feet in grass that’s still warm from the afternoon sun. The smell of rain somewhere in the distance, even when it hasn’t reached you yet.
It’s staying outside as the sky turns gold, listening to the crickets begin their evening chorus and knowing you still have a little while before someone calls you inside.
That was the feeling behind this Orlando family session.
Vintage textures, soft dresses, quilts strung between the trees and that hazy Florida light that seems to turn everything it touches into a memory. Nothing needed to be too polished. In fact, I wanted the opposite.
I wanted it to feel lived in.
The girls ran through the linens, picked flowers, tangled themselves around their mom and each other, and let the evening unfold around them.
And then the Florida sun did what it does so beautifully—dropped low enough to pour through the Spanish moss and turn the entire backyard gold.
That combination of nostalgia and real life is something I’m always chasing in my family photography.
Not recreating a childhood that never existed, but noticing the pieces of an old, familiar kind of life that are still right here: grass under your feet, sisters calling to each other across the yard, laundry moving in the breeze, the smell of an approaching summer rain and the sound of crickets coming alive as the light disappears.
The things that don't seem extraordinary while you're living them.
Until one day, they're the things you remember most.
Golden Hour Family Photos in Orlando, Florida
And then there's the light.
Florida can give us some absolutely incredible sunsets, especially during those warm, humid evenings when the light seems to hang in the air.
For family photography, golden hour—the period before sunset when the sun sits low in the sky—can completely transform a familiar place.
In this backyard, the sun filtered through the trees and Spanish moss, caught the girls' hair and wrapped everything in that hazy golden glow I love so much.
It's one of the reasons I often recommend evening sessions to families looking for outdoor family photography in Orlando.
We don't necessarily need a grand location.
We need beautiful light.
Some of my favorite sessions happen in backyards, at home, or in places families would never initially think of as a "photoshoot location."
Once the sun gets low enough, the ordinary can become cinematic.
And there is something particularly beautiful about photographing a family somewhere that already belongs to them.
Backyard Family Photos Can Be Just as Beautiful as a Destination
When people start planning family pictures, one of the first questions is usually:
Where should we take them?
And Orlando certainly isn't short on beautiful places for family photos.
But sometimes my answer is much simpler.
Home.
Your backyard doesn't have to look like an editorial garden. Your house doesn't need to be perfectly decorated. We don't have to hide every sign that real people actually live there.
Sometimes the familiarity is exactly what makes an at-home family photography session work.
Children have room to move. Everyone can settle in. We can incorporate pieces of your actual life into the photographs.
And years later, the setting becomes part of the memory.
You aren't only looking at how little your daughter once was.
You're remembering that yard.
The tree she played underneath.
The grass everyone ran across barefoot.
The porch you sat on.
The place that, for a chapter of your family's life, simply meant home.
That's something a beautiful public location can never completely replicate.
