A Summer Family Session in Lithuania | Destination Family Photographer
There are some summer days that seem to exist outside of time—the ones spent beneath tall pine trees, walking barefoot through the forest and following a winding path until it reaches the water.
As a destination family photographer, I am always drawn to the places that already hold meaning for a family. Sometimes that means photographing everyone at home in Florida. Other times, it means carrying my camera across an ocean and into the middle of a Lithuanian forest.
While visiting Lithuania, I photographed my husband Vilius’s cousins and their two little girls near Vilnius. They weren’t celebrating a traditional milestone or waiting for a special occasion. They simply wanted family photographs during the summer, surrounded by a landscape that belongs to their everyday life.
And that was more than enough.
A Documentary Family Session Near Vilnius, Lithuania
We began beneath the trees, where the forest floor was covered in moss, wild greenery and tiny treasures waiting to be discovered. The girls wandered freely, collecting berries and pinecones, examining everything they found and occasionally stopping long enough to share it with someone.
There were no expectations for them to stand perfectly still or smile on command. They were allowed to explore, play and be exactly as they were.
That freedom is what makes documentary family photography feel so alive.
Rather than building every photograph around a pose, I documented the family as they walked through the forest, carried tired children, held little hands and laughed together. We made room for the quieter details, too: a berry resting in a child’s palm, bare feet against the earth, a white bonnet glowing in the afternoon light and a daughter peeking over her father’s shoulder.
These are the pieces of family life that can feel ordinary while they are happening. Years later, they are often the things we miss most.
Family Photography That Belongs to the Place
One of my favorite parts of destination family photography is the opportunity to create photographs that could not have been made anywhere else.
This session did not simply happen in Lithuania. The landscape became part of the family’s story.
The towering pines, the mossy paths, the filtered summer sunlight and the stillness of the lake gave these photographs their sense of place. The family’s yellow, cream and linen clothing felt perfectly at home among the deep greens and warm browns of the forest.
Some images became sweeping environmental portraits, showing how small the family looked beneath the trees. Others focused on the intimacy of the moment: a child’s hand wrapped around her mother’s finger, sisters laughing together or two parents exchanging a quiet glance while their daughters played nearby.
Destination family photography should preserve more than beautiful scenery. It should show the relationship between a family and the place they are experiencing together.
From the Lithuanian Forest to the Lake
As we continued along the path, the forest eventually opened onto a peaceful lake with an old wooden dock stretching over the water.
The girls ran barefoot across the wooden boards, laughed together and wandered back toward the trees whenever something caught their attention. Their parents sat nearby, scooped them into their arms and let the evening unfold without forcing it into anything overly polished.
The lake was still. The forest stretched across the opposite shore. Golden light filtered through the branches and reflected against the water.
Nothing about the afternoon needed to be made grander than it was.
This was simply a family spending a summer day together in Lithuania. Two sisters laughing on the dock. Parents lifting their children into the air. Wind moving through linen and little floral dresses. Tiny hands gathering berries and pinecones along the way.
These are the kinds of family photographs I want to create—not only proof of what everyone looked like, but a record of what life felt like in that particular place and season.

But they will be able to see how small they once were. They will see the landscape surrounding their childhood, the way their parents carried them and how much love existed in the ordinary spaces between them.
Perhaps the photographs will feel the way summer memories often do: warm, a little wild and almost dreamlike.
